Dental Implants

A dental implant is a titanium-made structure which acts as an artificial replacement for tooth root to support crowns and bridges. It is a suitable way to replace a missing tooth. The main aim during the fitting of an implant is to attain a close contact with the supporting bone. There are different types of systems for dental implants.

It comprises of titanium screw or cylinder, 8 to 16mm long, which is fit into a readymade bony socket in the jaw. This acts as a replacement root for the missing tooth. Abutment is the special attachment fitted at the top of the implant to form an external connection for the artificial tooth or teeth, called crown or bridge respectively.

Need for implants

Implants come with a great deal of advantages over crowns and bridges. Some of which include:

  • They perform same functions as natural teeth and do not cause any difficulty while eating, chewing or cleaning the teeth.
  • They are used as a firm grip for dentures.
  • They feel and look like natural teeth.
  • They do not require root fillings as the healthy adjacent tooth need not be filed to support the missing tooth.
  • They maintain the bone structure beneath the replaced tooth.
  • They preserve wonderful appearance of the restored tooth and face.

They do not demand use of special glues to hold the artificial tooth as is the case with dentures.

The treatment methodology

A dental implant surgery involves a series of steps for the completion. The steps involved are:

Pre examination – Your dentist will conduct a thorough examination of your mouth after discussion of the suitable course of treatment. Radiographs will be taken of your jaws in order to assess the shape and condition of the bone tissue. If any nerves or sinuses are close to targeted implant area, it will be relocated to a new position. This helps the dentist to plan the implant placement correctly.

Implant insertion – Dental implants are carried out in a one-stage or two-stage procedure depending upon the patient’s clinical situations. In both the cases, a small incision is made in the gum to expose the bone with a small drill.

Preparing teeth impression – After your gum heals, your dentist will take an impression of your mouth. A model of the teeth will be made to get an identical crown or bridge which matches the rest of your teeth.

Fixing crowns and bridges – When the crowns are made, the dental expert will cement them on the abutments over the implants. He or she will analyse the fit and ask you to bite down to have a check on the upper and lower teeth line.
