5 Causes of Tooth Sensitivity and Better Oral Health

Does drinking hot or cold beverage makes you wince? Do you feel discomfort when you brush or floss? If you answered yes, then you might be suffering from tooth sensitivity. This condition usually occurs due to worn tooth enamel. Certain things can be done to decrease tooth sensitivity and improve your dental health. There are several conditions that might be giving rise to these problems. Here are some of them and some advice on getting relief from your sensitive teeth.

  • Teeth grinding – Most people grind their teeth without even knowing it. It may occur at any time, but commonly it will happen while they are sleeping. Teeth grinding breaks down the dentin and tooth enamel and that can lead to exposed nerves and hot and cold sensitivity.
  • Periodontal disease – Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is the result of continuous gum inflammation. As the gum disease progresses, the gums start receding from the teeth exposing the tooth root and nerves. However, brushing and flossing correctly can help to prevent gum disease.
  • Improper brushing – Some people do not know the right way to brush teeth. If you brush too hard, this can lead to enamel wear and tear and gum damage. A soft bristled toothbrush is best and taking your time to do a thorough job will also help. Make sure you brush at least twice a day to keep your teeth and mouth in the best health.
  • Cracked or damaged teeth – If you have a cracked or chipped tooth, this can lead to pain and also cause tooth sensitivity. See your dentist immediately for treatment.
  • Acidic and sugary diet – If you eat a lot of sweet and acidic foods and drinks, you might damage your tooth enamel. You need to eat well-balanced diet and be careful to clean your teeth well after eating, acidic foods such as citrus fruits, grains, tomatoes, pickled products and beverages like coffee, orange juice, wine, carbonated soda and sports drinks.
