In your pursuit of a dazzling smile and healthy function, you may need a prosthodontist. Prosthodontics is the dental science concerned with the replacement and restoration of missing or damaged teeth using an artificial device. This artificial device is called a prosthesis. A prosthesis may be a crown, bridge, dentures, veneer, or dental implant.

Not only teeth but prosthodontics can also help restore jaw bone and soft tissue defects, besides solving multiple TMJ problems.

Your prosthodontics visit may help:

  • Restore a missing tooth/teeth.
  • Save a severely damaged tooth.
  • Solve a cosmetic problem.
  • Relief of TMJ disorders and pain.
  • Treat sleep apnea.
  • Restore defects of newborns due to congenital reasons such as cleft palate.

Advantages of prosthodontics

  • Save a natural tooth from extraction.
  • Restore the masticatory function through the restoration of the missing teeth.
  • Restore esthetics.
  • Correct TMJ problems.
  • Adjust your bite.

Prosthodontic treatments

The prosthodontic treatment involves using various fixed or removable appliances to address a definite problem.

Prosthodontic Sdental Implants

Dental implants

Metal screws are embedded inside the jawbone to replace a missing tooth. The metal screw is designed in the form of a tapered cylinder to mimic the root of the tooth. Then, an abutment is screwed at its top to hold the final restoration. Dental implants are the top choice for replacing a missing tooth in the time being because they conserve the neighboring teeth and longevity.

Dental Crowns

It is an external shell used to cover a natural tooth. They can be metal-ceramic or porcelain. Porcelain crowns offer better esthetics and biocompatibility.

Dental crowns can protect a tooth from fracture after a root canal treatment or if it is a vital badly broken down one.

The prosthodontist removes a considerable amount of tooth structure to create room for the crown. Then, an impression is taken and sent to the dental technician to fabricate the crown. The shade of the crown is selected to match the surrounding teeth.

Air Polish 02

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are prosthetics to replace missing tooth or teeth. It comprises crowns at both ends, attached to the artificial teeth used for replacement. The crowns cover the teeth adjacent to the edentulous area to offer support and retention for the bridge. It serves the same purpose as a dental implant, to replace a missing tooth, but it is less conservative as it involves the reduction of the neighboring teeth.

Dentures are removable appliances designed with a pink acrylic base that covers the edentulous ridge to compensate for any soft tissue or bone defect and hold the artificial teeth.
According to the number of replaced teeth, dentures may be:

  • partial dentures used to replace multiple missing teeth
  • complete dentures in case of complete edentulism.

Dentures may be tissue-supported or supported over implant fixtures. Implant-supported dentures show higher retention than the tissue-supported.

They are restorative fillings constructed outside your mouth. After the preparation of the tooth cavity, an impression is recorded, and the filling is milled in a special machine using a porcelain block. Finally, the restoration is cemented to the tooth.

It is recommended when the remaining tooth structure is less than the amount needed for restoration retention and in a lesser amount to be eligible for crown construction.

The difference between inlays and onlays is that onlays cover one or more cusps of the tooth while inlays don’t.

Veneers are thin porcelain shells attached to the front of the tooth after minimal preparation. They provide a solution for spacing between teeth, discoloration, and malalignment of teeth.

Mouth guards

Mouth guards are treatment prostheses for bruxism, sleep apnea, and some TMJ disorders. Clenching during sleep can cause attrition of the teeth and stress on the TMJ muscles. A night guard will prevent contact between teeth to prevent the destructive effects.

In mild to moderate cases of sleep apnea, mouth guards can be effective in tongue and soft palate repositioning to keep the airway open during sleep.

TMJ pain due to muscle stress or nerve inflammation is a severe type of pain. A prosthodontist may prescribe a splint to decrease the stress on the TMJ and reduce pain.

Maxillofacial prosthodontics

Maxillofacial prosthodontics deals with patients having congenital or acquired bone or soft tissue defects.

For example, cleft palate is a congenital malformation when a baby is born with incomplete fusion between the palatal fragments of bone. A prosthetic device called an obturator will be helpful during feeding until surgical intervention is permitted.

Acquired defects are the defects in the face or jaws left behind after cancer excision or trauma.

The purpose of maxillofacial prosthetics is to improve the quality of life for these patients.

I have been registered at this dental practice now, for just over 15 years. Throughout that whole period, I have been lucky enough to have been looked after by the wonderful, and patient, Dr Prasad. He has covered many procedures in my mouth, from extraction, and root canal, right up to the most recent procedure, Composite bonding of my broken two front teeth. Do not hesitate to register at this practise, as you will be looked after with care and consideration.

Thank you Dr Prasao

Very friendly

During the lockdown period I was able to see Dr Irfan for a dental emergency I had. I’m so grateful that they have been available throughout this. Gillian the practice manager contacted me and offered me an appointment the same day. I am a long standing patient at this practice and cannot thank them enough for great service they have provided to me throughout the years. Great dentist, staff and management. Thank you all so much.

Susan L.

The Dental Care Center has been an excellent dentist surgery that I have been attending as a patient for many years. When I was young I didn’t have a pleasant experience with my local dentist on more than one occasion. I found the dentist at Camden dental care center very reassuring and comforting. The management and reception were also very welcoming.

Stewart S.

Really efficient service and friendly helpful staff, clean and fresh environment

Stephanie P.

Great desk staff and Dentists. Excellent with young children.

Spencer M.

Brilliant service from Dr Mansi Patel – she ensured I was well informed regarding my dental issues and spent a whole consultation discussing my dental history and reviewing my previous scans. She provided the means to communicate out of hours, if I had any further queries. She demonstrated empathy and encouraged collaborative decision making throughout. This is a refreshing approach, speaking from someone who’s a healthcare professional. Would recommend!

Sonia M.
