What You Should Know about Basic Dental Care

Do you know what basic dental care actually is? It is about brushing and flossing regularly, visiting a good dentist for routine checkups and proper cleanings. Take well-balanced diet that includes foods containing vegetables, whole grains, fruits and dairy products.

Importance of basic dental care

  • Prevents tooth decay and gum disease that may cause damage to the bones and gum tissue. This supports the teeth that can be the reason for teeth loss.
  • Lessen time with your dentist and dental hygienist to make the trip comfortable and pleasant.
  • Reduce the need for tooth fillings and other expensive dentistry procedures.
  • Fight the problem of bad breath. Brushing and flossing can help you get rid of bacteria and germs from the mouth.
  • Keep your teeth whiter and brighter by preventing stains from certain foods, drinks and tobacco.
  • Improve your dental health condition so that your teeth are meant to last for a lifetime.

Avoid dental problems for a clean and healthy mouth

  • Proper intake of food and good nutrition are essential to keep your teeth and gums strong and healthy.
  • You should brush teeth at least two times a day and floss daily to prevent bacteria and germs from attacking the teeth. This will remove plaque that can cause gums, damaged teeth and surrounding bones.
  • Use Fluoride containing toothpaste that prevents cavities and tooth decay. You may talk to your dentist if you need a mouthwash containing Fluoride or the one with ingredients that helps fight plaque.
  • Do not take foods that contain high amount of sugar as this can help plaque to grow further.
  • Avoid taking tobacco products that may lead to oral cancer and gum disease. High exposure to tobacco smoking can also cause gum disease and other health related problems.
  • Use soft bristled toothpaste or tongue cleaner that can stroke in the back and front direction. Tongue cleaning is very important for the ones who smoke a lot or whose tongue is deeply grooved.
  • Schedule an appointment with the dental surgeon for a thorough examination of your mouth.

When you should take your child to a dentist

The dental practitioner can assess your child’s mouth and any potential issues that may lead to dental problems by the time they reach 6 months of age. If the practitioner identifies any concerns, it’s important to take your baby to a dentist before their first birthday, which is when primary teeth typically begin to emerge. After the initial visit, schedule regular dental check-ups every six months.
If your child has some oral problems due to some disease, injury or developmental issue, it is advised to see a paediatric dentist immediately.
